What is OpenSky?
OpenSky is based on a simple idea: that online shopping can – and should – be better. So in May, 2009, we set out to do just that. We asked ourselves a series of questions:
- Why is online shopping so impersonal?
- Can you trust someone online like you trust the owner of your neighborhood store?
- In this era of sameness, is it possible to find surprising and unique products?
To answer these questions, we thought about the people we trust in the 21st century. Bloggers, authors, reporters, TV personalities, professors and world-renown experts. Only one question remained: How could we harness their knowledge and enthusiasm, and channel it into the online shopping experience?
In the end, the answer was obvious: Empower them.
So that’s what we did. We provided them with the tools they’d need to create Shops dedicated to the products they love. These Shops aren’t just a means to an end, but an extension of their online and offline brands. The results have been breathtaking. Not only have we been overwhelmed with Shopkeeper applications, but their audiences have swarmed our site (only crashing it once).
